Our equipment spacing standard
Most gym floors get drawn to fit the maximum number of machines. That is how you end up with a plate-loaded row nobody can load properly. We operate 20 gyms on the equipment we sell, so we plan floors around how members actually move, not just where the machines fit.
This is the spacing we specify on our own fit-outs. Take it, argue with it, or hand it to your architect.
The standard
Clear space measured from the widest point of the machine, including weight horns and swing arms, to the next obstruction.

The 900 mm figure lines up with the industry norm of roughly 3 ft clear around resistance equipment. The loading figures are ours. No published standard we know of sets an aisle width for loading plates, so we derived these from the job itself and from running our own floors.
Why plate-loaded needs more
The usual 900 mm rule is about getting on and off a machine. Loading is a different job, and the numbers come from the plate, not the frame.
450 mm
The plate itself
An Olympic or bumper plate is 450 mm across, the IPF and IWF regulation size. Your member is carrying that, not a dumbbell.
600 mm
The person
Shoulder width plus the room to turn while holding 25 kg at hip height. They are not standing still, they are swinging a load onto a horn.
2 x
Both sides, every time
Plates go on both horns and come off both horns. A machine with one good side and one tight side gets loaded unevenly, or not at all.
Add those together and 900 mm is the floor, not a comfortable working figure. At 900 mm a member can load the machine, but nobody can pass behind them while they do it.
The rule most floors get wrong
A loading zone is not a walkway. If you draw 900 mm between two machines and that same gap is how members reach the back of the room, then every time someone loads a 25 kg plate they block the route. The person squeezing past walks into a plate at hip height.
Pick one. Either the gap is dead-end service space at 900 to 1,200 mm, or it carries traffic and needs 1,500 mm and up. Trying to make one gap do both jobs is where injuries and complaints come from.
Plate trees within three paces
Spacing only works if the plates have somewhere to go. Put the tree across the floor and the plates stay on the machine. That is the real reason a gym looks untidy an hour after opening, and it is why members find machines still loaded with 100 kg they cannot shift.
We plan a tree or rack within two to three paces of the horns it serves. Budget the footprint for it at layout stage, not after the equipment lands.
Plan against real machines
Spacing rules are useless without the machine widths they wrap around. These are the actual figures from the plate-loaded range we distribute, so you can size a bay before anything ships.

Measured across our published DHZ plate-loaded range. Just under a third of it is 1,600 mm or wider, so a layout drawn to the median will not survive contact with the big units.
Working it out
A typical plate-loaded bay comes to roughly3.5 m: a 1,450 mm machine with 1,000 mm of loading space each side.
For the wide units, a leg press or a Smith machine, budget closer to4.2 m. Check the width on the product page before you commit the drawing.

This is our working standard, built from operating our own gyms and fitting out other people's. It is not a building code and it does not replace one. Fire escape routes, accessible access requirements and any condition set by your local authority or building management come first, and they will sometimes ask for more than the figures above.
Manufacturer installation clearances also come first where they are stricter. If your floor has a constraint that makes these numbers impossible, tell us early. Reworking a layout on paper is free. Rearranging a delivered floor is not.
