J-hooks take more daily abuse than any other rack part - every re-rack is a small collision. The HDPE body is a hard-wearing polymer, so a decade of re-racks costs neither the bar's knurl nor the rack's paint, and the stainless rear pin stops the upright scratching where the hook seats.
